Aubameyang’s Marseille future remains uncertain

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have left Olympique de Marseille during the winter transfer window after attracting interest from clubs in Spain, as uncertainty continues to surround his long-term future at the French side.

The forward, who has experienced a mixed spell since returning to Marseille, was reportedly the subject of offers from Real Betis and Atlético Madrid.

However, according to reports from L’Équipe, both proposals were rejected by Marseille at the time, with club officials opting to retain the player.

The decision was overseen by then-president Pablo Longoria, who is said to have blocked any potential departure despite growing interest from abroad.

Aubameyang remains under contract with Marseille until June 2027, leaving the club in a strong position regarding any future negotiations.

His current situation marks a contrast with his strong performances during the 2023–2024 campaign, when he enjoyed a more successful return to the club.

This season, however, has proved more difficult, with consistency and stability harder to maintain amid a fluctuating team environment.

While the winter window has closed without a move materialising, the attention surrounding Aubameyang is expected to continue into the summer.

His profile and experience remain attractive to clubs across Europe, particularly in Spain, where interest was already established earlier in the year.

For Marseille, retaining the forward reflects a broader challenge of balancing squad stability with external demand for key players.

The club’s decision to resist offers highlights his continued importance within the squad, despite questions over form and long-term direction.

As the season progresses, Aubameyang’s future is likely to remain a talking point, with his contract situation ensuring that Marseille retain full control over any potential exit or continued stay at the club.
