Aston Villa agree deal to sign Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich
Aston Villa have reached a final agreement to sign German midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to Sky Sport Germany.
The 31-year-old is expected to complete his medical soon before signing for the Villans. The length of his contract has not yet been finalised, with a two-year or three-year deal under discussion.
Goretzka left Bayern Munich after his contract expired at the end of the 2025-26 season. His departure brought an end to his time with the Bundesliga club, where he spent the final season of his career so far before attracting interest from clubs elsewhere in Europe.
The midfielder had previously been linked with a move to AC Milan and FC Barcelona during the summer. However, Aston Villa have now moved ahead of those potential destinations by agreeing terms for his transfer.
Goretzka’s final campaign with Bayern Munich produced five goals and five assists in 48 appearances in all competitions. He joins Aston Villa with extensive experience at the highest level, having played 541 matches during his career and contributed 102 goals and 82 assists.
He began his senior career with Bochum before moving to Schalke, where his performances earned him a transfer to Bayern Munich. Across his spells with those three clubs, Goretzka has accumulated more than 500 competitive appearances.
Aston Villa are competing in the UEFA Champions League this season after finishing fourth in the previous Premier League campaign. Their European involvement adds further significance to the expected arrival of a player with Goretzka’s experience in major domestic and continental competitions.
Unai Emery’s side are preparing to begin their domestic campaign on Sunday, when they face Brighton in the Premier League.
Villa also recently played in the UEFA Super Cup, having qualified as winners of last season’s UEFA Europa League. They were beaten 2-1 by Paris Saint-Germain in that match.
The agreement with Goretzka still requires the midfielder to complete his medical and sign the contract, but Sky Sport Germany says the transfer itself has been settled. Once the formalities are concluded, he will become the latest addition to an Aston Villa squad preparing for both the demands of the Premier League and a return to Europe’s elite club competition.
