AS FAR clinch FIFA Women’s Champions Cup spot after CAF Champions League triumph
AS FAR have secured Africa’s coveted slot at the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup after edging ASEC Mimosas 2-1 in Friday’s CAF Women’s Champions League final, sealing their return to the global stage.
The Moroccan champions entered the final knowing victory would not only deliver continental glory but also confirm their place among the world’s elite in December’s historic tournament.
They rose to the occasion with composure and efficiency, converting two crucial penalties to claim the title and punch their ticket to the Women’s Champions Cup.
Hanane Ait El Haj opened the scoring from the spot in the 13th minute after Safa Banouk was fouled inside the box.
That early breakthrough set the tone as AS FAR controlled proceedings down the flanks, using the pace and width of Zineb Erroudany and Banouk to keep the Ivorians under pressure.
ASEC hit back after the break through Ami Prisca Diallo’s header following a superb delivery from Sopie Philomene Marie Ange Brou, briefly threatening to derail AS FAR’s path to the global competition.
But the Moroccan giants remained focused on the bigger mission.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 84th minute when Sofia Bouftini was brought down, allowing experienced defender Zineb Redouani to step up and bury the decisive penalty that ultimately secured their spot in the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
AS FAR will now represent Africa in Round Two of the tournament, taking on Chinese champions Wuhan Chegu Jiangda WFC on 14 December at the Stade Municipal de Berrechid.
With continental business handled, the Moroccan powerhouse can now fully concentrate on preparing for the Women’s Champions Cup – where they aim to showcase Africa’s strength at the highest level of women’s club football.
