Arthur Zwane urged to stay true to himself as AmaZulu and Bafana roles beckon

Arthur Zwane’s possible appointment to Pitso Mosimane’s Bafana Bafana technical team will bring fresh opportunities, but the AmaZulu coach must preserve the identity that has driven his progress at club level.

Zwane is reportedly being considered as Mosimane’s second assistant, with his responsibilities expected to include leading the SA U23 setup. The position would be on a dual basis, allowing him to remain in charge of AmaZulu while also working with the senior national team.

The move would follow Mosimane’s decision to appoint former Botswana national team coach Morena Ramoreboli as his first assistant.

Interest in Zwane has grown as AmaZulu have continued to produce results and remain among the chasing pack in the Betway Premiership. His work has earned him increasing recognition as one of the PSL’s most effective and industrious coaches.

AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu will be particularly pleased to have retained him. Zwane was linked with a move to Sekhukhune United and other clubs during the winter, but remained at Usuthu during pre-season.

The speculation over his future has not ended, however, with his success at AmaZulu continuing to attract attention.

Zwane’s record of developing young players would make him a natural fit for an U23 role. Forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has become an important part of AmaZulu’s attack this season and has impressed in the Betway Premiership.

The coach began his career in Kaizer Chiefs’ development structures, where he helped players including Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Siyabonga Ngezana and Bruce Bvuma progress towards professional football.

Working alongside Mosimane could also support Zwane’s development. The Bafana Bafana head coach has extensive continental experience and a decorated track record, while his assistants are often expected to understand and reflect his tactical approach.

That influence could help Zwane acquire valuable habits, but he will also need to maintain an independent perspective. His work at AmaZulu has been shaped by his own principles, and the club represents a separate project from the national team.

The environment he encounters with Bafana Bafana is likely to differ from his previous experience under Molefi Ntseki. Adaptability will be important, particularly while managing the demands of two roles.

Zwane must also retain the confidence of his players and backroom staff at AmaZulu. The short turnaround between Fifa international breaks and the return of domestic fixtures means the club’s technical team will need to keep its work progressing smoothly when he is away on national-team duty.

When he returns, Zwane will be expected to build on the elements that are working at AmaZulu while making useful changes where necessary. Balancing the two responsibilities will require him to continue learning without losing the authority and self-belief that have helped establish him at Usuthu.

Football is continually changing, and Zwane’s challenge will be to remain both student and leader while protecting the qualities that have made his rise at AmaZulu stand out.
