Chelsea’s attacking strength will face its first major examination of the 2026/27 Premier League season when they visit reigning champions Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Both clubs have won their opening two league matches and are among only four teams still boasting a 100% record heading into gameweek three. That run will end for one of them after this meeting.
Arsenal began the campaign by beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield in Cardiff before defeating Coventry City by the same score at home. Mikel Arteta’s side then secured a narrow 1-0 victory away to Aston Villa.
Chelsea, meanwhile, started the Xabi Alonso era with a 3-2 win at neighbours Fulham and followed that with an entertaining 4-3 home success against Brighton.
The Gunners are favourites, partly because of home advantage and their recent dominance in this fixture. Arsenal are unbeaten in their past 10 meetings with Chelsea, winning seven of them. Chelsea’s last victory came five years ago, when they won 2-0 at Emirates Stadium on 22 August 2021.
However, Chelsea’s attacking threat gives Arsenal plenty to consider. The Blues have scored seven goals in their first two Premier League matches, more than any other side, with five coming from their leading attacking trio of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rodgers.
Rodgers joined from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m and has added further quality to a forward line that already includes Palmer and Pedro. Chelsea can now make a strong claim to possessing the best attack in the Premier League.
That threat will test an Arsenal defence that has otherwise looked highly dependable. The match could also be decided in midfield, where both sides have significant strengths.
Arsenal signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75m (R1.6 billion), while also resisting interest in Martin Zubimendi to keep him in north London. Guimaraes has yet to start for the club, however, because 19-year-old England international Myles Lewis-Skelly has impressed in both of Arsenal’s opening victories alongside the reliable Declan Rice.
Chelsea have left a gap in midfield after selling Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City without signing a replacement. Alonso has instead placed his faith in Romeo Lavia, who scored his first goal for Chelsea against Brighton. Lavia is expected to continue alongside Reece James.
The contest between Lavia and James and Arsenal’s Rice and Lewis-Skelly could prove decisive, with pressing, progressive passing and second-ball recoveries likely to shape possession and the tempo of the game.
Team news
Arsenal remain without defenders Jurrien Timber, who has a groin problem, and William Saliba, who is recovering from a back issue. Both players have nevertheless been included in the club’s 22-man Champions League squad.
Rice was forced off while limping during Monday’s match against Aston Villa, raising concerns about his availability. He has trained this week and is expected to be fit.
Chelsea are waiting for an update on Moises Caicedo, who came on after 67 minutes against Brighton but was withdrawn 13 minutes later after aggravating an existing knock. Even if he is cleared to play, Alonso may choose not to risk him.
Jordan Henderson remains unavailable and will have to wait longer for his Chelsea debut. Marco Palestra, signed from Atalanta for about £47m, is reportedly nearing a return, although it is not yet known whether he will be included in the matchday squad.
Chelsea’s title credentials
Expectations are high around Chelsea, with Alonso considered a significant upgrade on Liam Rosenior. The 44-year-old Spaniard is a serial winner whose desire for trophies matches the club’s ambitions.
The additions of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and Emiliano Martinez, along with Henderson’s leadership and Rodgers’ goals and assists, have strengthened the belief that Chelsea can challenge Arsenal’s bid to retain the title.
Arsenal, though, remain favourites for good reason. David Raya, Gabriel and Konsa provide a strong defensive platform, while Rice and Martin Odegaard give Arteta control in midfield. Bukayo Saka leads an attack that is capable of troubling any opponent.
Chelsea’s progress will be measured against the best, and Sunday’s encounter at Arsenal offers an early indication of whether Alonso’s side can mount a serious title challenge.
The match also comes before Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign. The Gunners travel to Italy on Wednesday to face Serie A giants Napoli as they pursue their first European trophy.
