Arsenal ended a 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield by beating Liverpool 1-0 on Sunday, moving three points clear at the top of the table.
Kai Havertz scored the only goal in the 16th minute, converting a low cross from England midfielder Declan Rice with a first-time finish.
The result was Arsenal’s first league win at Liverpool’s ground since 2012. On that occasion, Mikel Arteta was a captain for the London club; he is now Arsenal’s manager.
Liverpool controlled possession for much of the match and created several opportunities to level, but were unable to find a way past the Arsenal defence in front of their home supporters.
Arsenal had produced a balanced performance during the opening 15 minutes before taking the lead. They then dropped deeper and relied largely on counter-attacks, creating chances to extend their advantage but failing to take them.
The victory allowed Arsenal to capitalise on Manchester City’s defeat by Brighton on Saturday. Manchester City lost 1-0, leaving Arsenal alone at the summit with 24 points, three ahead of the defending champions.
Liverpool remain fifth on 15 points after suffering their second Premier League defeat of the season.
