Argentina FA calls for continuity under Infantino after FIFA investment dispute

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has reaffirmed its support for the policies pursued by FIFA over the past decade, while backing the organisation’s decision to withdraw a controversial proposal involving private investment in the World Cup.

In an official statement addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the AFA said the governing body’s recent approach had focused on the global development of football and institutional stability.

“On behalf of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and its Executive Committee, we would like to express our support for the policy pursued over the past ten years. This policy was primarily aimed at the development of football worldwide and institutional stability, based on a clear, stable and transparent governance model,” the statement said.

Infantino has faced increased scrutiny after a proposal was put forward to sell parts of the World Cup to private investors. The plan was subsequently withdrawn by FIFA following criticism and uncertainty within the international football community.

“In light of the recent events that are now public, we wish to emphasise that FIFA has taken the decision to withdraw the project in question. From the outset, this proposal created more uncertainty than clarity within the international football community,” the AFA said.

The Argentine association also welcomed the acknowledgement of mistakes made during the process and the apology sent to FIFA’s 211 member associations.

“Therefore, we wish to underline the importance of acknowledging the mistakes made in this process and of offering an apology in the message addressed to FIFA’s 211 member associations. Respect for the principles of good governance is a fundamental pillar for strong relations between FIFA, its affiliated associations and the continental confederations,” the AFA added.

The statement placed particular emphasis on transparency, established structures and democratic decision-making. The AFA said those principles were necessary to preserve unity across international football and support the sport’s wider development.

“In line with our vision, this transformation is based on transparent governance, respect for statutory structures and adherence to democratic decision-making procedures. These are essential principles for maintaining the unity of the international football family and continuing together with sporting and institutional progress, with a positive impact on the quality of life of millions of people who play our beloved sport,” the Argentine Football Association said.

The declaration was issued ahead of the next FIFA Congress, where the AFA said it remained committed to working under Infantino’s leadership.

The association concluded its letter by reaffirming its belief that continuity was the best way to promote a more inclusive game.

“With a view to the next FIFA Congress, the association that I have the honour of chairing confirms its conviction that the way forward is to continue working under your leadership, so that we can continue to build together a better and even more inclusive football,” the AFA said.

The statement therefore combined support for FIFA’s direction over the last decade with a clear insistence that future decisions should follow transparent governance processes and recognised democratic procedures.
