Talib tips Zamalek to make the most of open CAF Champions League route

Abdel Rahim Talib believes Zamalek have a genuine opportunity to reach the latter stages of this season’s CAF Champions League after the early exit of holders Mamelodi Sundowns and the absence of Al Ahly and Wydad.

The Moroccan, head coach of Rwandan Army, was speaking after his side were eliminated by Zamalek, who secured a place in the group stage on Saturday with a 2-0 aggregate victory. Zamalek won both legs 1-0, reaching the group stage for the first time in three seasons.

Talib said his team failed to produce the required performance in the first half of the second leg, but improved significantly after the interval.

“We did not show the level we wanted in the first half,” he told ON Sport. “After the break, we performed better and controlled the match, but we could not turn our chances into goals.”

The coach said the second match followed a similar pattern to the first leg in Kigali. Tactical changes made at half-time helped Rwandan Army create opportunities and reach the Zamalek penalty area, but their finishing prevented them from changing the outcome.

“Our players reached the goal through the flanks, but that was not enough,” Talib said. “We lacked accuracy in the final touch.”

Despite the disappointment, he said the tie had provided valuable experience for his side, particularly against a Zamalek team whose continental know-how and strong home support helped them manage the contest.

Talib also praised Zamalek’s status and squad depth, highlighting the Egyptian club’s history, winning mentality and record of collecting titles.

“Zamalek have a great history and a culture of winning and lifting trophies,” he said. “They have an excellent group of players and substitutes, as well as a high-level coach.”

The Moroccan went on to suggest that the changes in the competition could work in Zamalek’s favour. Mamelodi Sundowns’ elimination, combined with Al Ahly and Wydad not competing in this edition, has left Zamalek with what Talib considers a realistic chance of progressing towards the final rounds.

He hopes the club can take advantage of the situation and end the campaign as champions.

“I congratulate Zamalek and hope they win the title,” Talib said.
