Anis Hadji Moussa names Senegal as Algeria’s biggest threat ahead of AFCON
Algerian forward Anis Hadji Moussa has identified Senegal as the team he fears most in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite Algeria’s strong historical record against the Teranga Lions.
With ten months remaining before the tournament kicks off in Morocco, Hadji Moussa shared his thoughts on the competition and Algeria’s chances, underlining Senegal’s formidable presence in African football.
“The team I fear the most is Senegal. Plus, I have a lot of Senegalese friends,” Hadji Moussa revealed during an interview with Sam Foot X.
His admission highlights the respect he holds for Senegal’s strength, even though Algeria has often come out on top in previous encounters.
Impressive Form on the European Stage
The 23-year-old striker has been making headlines with his recent performances in the UEFA Champions League.
His standout display in the return leg against AC Milan at San Siro helped his club secure progression in Europe’s most prestigious competition.
With seven goals across all competitions this season, Hadji Moussa’s form is peaking at the right time as he eyes a spot in Algeria’s squad for AFCON 2025.
Having already earned three caps for Algeria’s senior team, the former RC Lens academy product is pushing hard to solidify his place among the Fennecs’ elite.
His dynamic style of play and growing experience on the European stage make him a strong contender for selection as Algeria looks to reclaim continental glory.
Senegal: A Respectable Rivalry
While Hadji Moussa openly respects Senegal’s prowess, the historical record tilts in Algeria’s favor. In their last ten meetings, Algeria has secured six victories, with Senegal managing just two wins and two matches ending in draws.
Despite this, Senegal remains a major force in African football, consistently fielding squads filled with top European-based talents.
Senegal’s recent success, including their AFCON 2021 triumph, has solidified their status as one of the continent’s most consistent performers.
Their blend of experience and emerging talent makes them one of the primary contenders for the upcoming tournament, something Hadji Moussa is acutely aware of.
AFCON Aspirations and the Road Ahead
For Hadji Moussa, the road to Morocco is as much about personal ambition as it is national pride.
His club form has strengthened his case for a call-up, but with Algeria’s attacking lineup stacked with talent, competition remains fierce.
AFCON 2025 represents a crucial opportunity for Algeria to re-establish its dominance on the African stage.
After lifting the trophy in 2019, the Fennecs faced disappointment in their 2021 title defense, exiting in the group stage.
This year, expectations are high for the team to make a strong comeback.
Hadji Moussa’s growing maturity and understanding of the challenges ahead reflect the mindset needed within Algeria’s squad.
Recognizing Senegal as a primary threat demonstrates his respect for the competition but also highlights the focus required to succeed at this level.
A Tournament of Giants
With traditional powerhouses like Egypt, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Morocco all expected to contend, AFCON 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most competitive editions in recent memory.
Yet, it is Senegal’s blend of physical strength, tactical discipline, and attacking flair that seems to linger most in Hadji Moussa’s mind.
As Algeria prepares for the tournament, players like Hadji Moussa will be crucial in driving the team forward.
Whether he earns a spot in the final squad or continues building his profile in Europe, his growing voice reflects the ambition within Algerian football.
For now, though, his focus remains sharp: helping his club in Europe and doing everything possible to represent Algeria in Morocco later this year.
And if that path leads to a showdown with Senegal, Hadji Moussa knows it will take more than just confidence to overcome the challenge.
