Sunderland boss Le Bris delighted as Morocco star Talbi chooses to stay at club

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris says he is pleased Chemsdine Talbi has decided to remain at the club after the Moroccan international scored the winning goal against Hull City in the League Cup.

Talbi struck in the 71st minute at the Stadium of Light to secure a 1-0 victory for Sunderland and book their place in the last 16 of the competition.

The 21-year-old started in an unfamiliar number 10 position and produced a composed finish, chipping Hull goalkeeper Dillon Phillips after Sunderland launched a counter-attack.

Le Bris confirms clarity over Talbi’s future

Talbi’s future had been uncertain during the final stages of the transfer window, with several clubs reportedly showing interest in the Morocco international.

However, discussions between the player and Sunderland have now brought greater clarity, according to Le Bris.

“Now we have clarity, from his side, from our side, and we’re looking forward,” the Sunderland coach said.

The Frenchman had previously acknowledged that Talbi could leave the club, despite describing the youngster as a player with “huge potential”.

Moroccan attacker impresses in new role

Le Bris was also encouraged by Talbi’s ability to operate centrally after moving him away from his usual wide position.

The Sunderland boss believes the Moroccan can be effective as a number 10, particularly when the team wins possession and has space to attack.

Talbi’s pace, ability to carry the ball, link up with teammates and make repeated runs were all evident in the move that produced his decisive goal against Hull.

His performance provided an immediate response after days of uncertainty surrounding his future.

Talbi had attracted interest from abroad

The Moroccan had been linked with a move away from Sunderland, with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad reportedly among his suitors.

Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce were also linked with the winger, particularly because their transfer windows remained open after the English deadline.

Talbi was subsequently left out of Sunderland’s 22-man Europa League squad while discussions over his future continued.

Morocco star now focused on Sunderland

Talbi has ultimately remained on Wearside and wasted little time making an impact.

His winning goal against Hull not only sent Sunderland into the League Cup last 16 but also gave Le Bris another reason to be optimistic about the Moroccan’s contribution to the club’s campaign.

With his immediate future now clearer, Talbi can turn his attention towards establishing himself as an important player for Sunderland in the months ahead.
