Aneurin Donald has received his first England call-up after being named in the squad for the three-match T20I home series against Sri Lanka.
The 29-year-old top-order batter impressed during the domestic season with Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast before making a further impact for Trent Rockets in last month’s Hundred final. Donald’s performance in that match, where he was the Rockets’ top scorer, also brought him to the attention of England head coach Brendon McCullum.
The first T20I will be played in Southampton on 15 September, with England naming a squad that also includes Harry Brook, who will captain the side.
Donald is one of two uncapped players selected across England’s squads for the Sri Lanka series. Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe has been included in the ODI group and could make his international debut when that series follows the T20Is.
England selector Marcus North said: “Aneurin Donald and Henry Crocombe are two promising players who have earned their places on the back of impressive performances in domestic cricket.
“Aneurin has had an exceptional season for Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast and also with Trent Rockets in the Hundred while Henry is a player we have had an eye on all summer.”
England’s white-ball team will be without three regulars for the series because of injury. Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell and Sam Curran are all unavailable, with Bethell suffering from a knee problem and Curran dealing with a groin injury.
The T20I squad contains a blend of established players and new selections. Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Ben Duckett, Liam Dawson and Will Jacks are among those named alongside Donald.
Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue complete the group, with Gus Atkinson also selected.
The ODI squad includes Joe Root and Rehan Ahmed, while Crocombe is the only player named in that group who does not feature in the T20I squad. Brook will again captain the side, with Buttler, Archer, Atkinson, Banton, Baker, Cox, Dawson, Duckett, Jacks, Overton, Rashid and Tongue also selected.
