Amir Abdou reflects on early days in charge of Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso head coach Amir Abdou has described the country as “a great nation in African football” as he reflected on his early experiences in charge of the Stallions following his appointment a few months ago.

Abdou, who recently took charge of the national team, oversaw his first matches during the March international break in two friendly fixtures against Guinea-Bissau.

Speaking to La Dépêche, he explained that accepting the role felt like a natural step given Burkina Faso’s footballing history and ambition.

“Frankly, yes, it was quite natural to say yes. Burkina Faso is a great nation in African football, with a history, an identity, and above all, quality players.

It’s an ambitious project, and for a coach, it’s always motivating to be able to work with a national team like that. So the decision was quick.”

The coach also shed light on the discussions that led to his appointment, revealing that initial contact with the Burkinabe football authorities was straightforward and built on mutual understanding of the project’s direction.

“The initial contact was quite straightforward. There were discussions with the federation, who presented their project and vision.

We discussed objectives, resources, and, most importantly, the direction we wanted to take the team.

The negotiations went smoothly, in an atmosphere of trust, which made my decision easier.”

Since taking charge, Abdou has already seen encouraging early signs from his squad. Burkina Faso recorded a 5-0 victory in one of the March friendlies before drawing 1-1 in the second match, results that have given the coach an initial insight into the team’s capabilities and structure.

Reflecting on what he has observed so far, Abdou highlighted the unity and balance within the squad, while also pointing to the blend of experienced players and emerging talent as a key strength for the future.

“I would say that this team’s greatest strength is its mindset. There’s a lot of commitment and solidarity. Then there’s the talent, with players capable of making a difference individually.

We also have a good balance between experience and youth, which is very important for building something solid. And there are also many dual nationals in Europe: it’s up to us to convince them to choose Burkina Faso…”

As Abdou continues to settle into his role, attention will turn to how he builds on this early foundation as Burkina Faso look to strengthen their position in African football under his leadership.
