AmaZulu’s Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya wins Betway Premiership Player of the Month award

AmaZulu FC striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, Orlando Pirates manager Abdeslam Ouaddou and Mamelodi Sundowns forward Brayan Leon have received the first Betway Premiership Monthly Awards of the 2026/27 season after standout performances in August.

Ngwenya was named Player of the Month after scoring five goals in four matches, a run which has lifted the 23-year-old Zimbabwean international to the top of the Betway Premiership scoring charts.

His goals have also helped AmaZulu FC rise to fourth in the league table, with the Durban-based club benefiting from the striker’s impressive start to the campaign.

Ngwenya was selected ahead of TS Galaxy’s Victor Letsoalo and Orlando Pirates defender Lebone Seema for the individual award.

A panel of Premier Soccer League media-accredited judges chose the three winners on Monday, 7 September, following a month in which several players, coaches and teams produced notable performances.

Ouaddou recognised after strong Pirates start

Ouaddou was named Coach of the Month after leading reigning Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates to three victories and one draw in their opening four matches.

The award adds to the Moroccan-Frenchman’s growing list of achievements since taking charge of the Soweto club. He also claimed the final Betway Premiership Coach of the Month award of the previous season in May.

His latest recognition further highlights the impact Ouaddou has made at Orlando Pirates since his arrival, with the champions remaining unbeaten through their first four league fixtures.

Leon strike takes Goal of the Month award

Leon won the Goal of the Month prize for the volley he scored against AmaZulu FC.

The Mamelodi Sundowns forward’s finish was selected despite strong competition from his club-mate Teboho Mokoena, whose free-kick came in the same match, and Vincent Pule’s goal for Siwelele FC against TS Galaxy.

The panel ultimately favoured Leon’s well-struck effort, completing the first set of Betway Premiership monthly awards for the new season.

The August awards recognise the early individual and team performances that have shaped the opening weeks of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.
