Bongani Zungu leaves AmaZulu

Former South Africa midfielder Bongani Zungu has officially left AmaZulu following the expiration of his contract with the Durban-based club.

The experienced midfielder is among six players who have been released by Usuthu as part of the club’s squad restructuring ahead of the new season.

Zungu’s departure comes after a disappointing spell at AmaZulu, where he struggled to make a significant impact despite arriving with a wealth of experience from some of Europe’s top leagues.

The 32-year-old midfielder joined the club with high expectations after an impressive career that saw him play in Scotland, France and Portugal. During his prime years, Zungu represented clubs such as Rangers in Scotland, Amiens in France and Vitória de Guimarães in Portugal, while also becoming a regular figure in the South African national team setup.

Upon his arrival at AmaZulu, he was viewed as a key signing who could provide leadership, experience and guidance to a squad that was looking to compete at a higher level. However, his time at the club did not go according to plan, with limited appearances and inconsistency preventing him from playing a major role.

Reports had suggested that Zungu’s relationship with head coach Arthur Zwane became strained during the season, with concerns surrounding his conduct within the team environment. Although the club has not publicly detailed the reasons behind his exit, his lack of involvement in the squad contributed to speculation over his future.

AmaZulu have now decided against renewing his contract, bringing an end to his short stay in Durban.

The decision forms part of a wider squad overhaul by Usuthu, who are looking to build a team capable of achieving better results in the upcoming campaign. Several players who did not feature regularly last season have been released as the club prepares for a new chapter.

Alongside Zungu, AmaZulu have also confirmed the departures of goalkeeper Richard Ofori, Sphephelo Majola, Mason Mushore, Thabiso Kutumela and Elmo Kambindu.

The exits highlight the club’s intention to refresh their squad and create space for new additions ahead of the 2026/27 season.

For Zungu, the next step in his career remains uncertain. Despite his recent struggles, the midfielder’s experience, technical ability and international pedigree could attract interest from clubs looking for a seasoned player capable of providing leadership on and off the pitch.

His departure from AmaZulu marks another chapter in a career that has seen him represent some respected clubs across Europe and earn more than 30 caps for South Africa. The midfielder will now consider his options as he looks to continue his football journey beyond Durban.
