Alphonso Davies contract twist as Bayern Munich star attracts Man Utd interest

Canada international Alphonso Davies could remain at Bayern Munich despite strong interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United, after sporting director Christoph Freund suggested the left-back may agree a new contract.

Davies is entering the final six months of his existing deal with the Bundesliga club, placing his future at the centre of growing speculation ahead of the end of the season.

Real Madrid have been widely linked with the 24-year-old and are reportedly considering strengthening their defence with his signing. Manchester United and Liverpool have also emerged as potential contenders for Davies, who is expected to be available at the end of the campaign if he does not extend his current agreement.

However, the three European clubs could all be denied the chance to sign him if Bayern succeed in reaching a new agreement with their long-serving defender.

Bayern sporting director Freund indicated that negotiations could have a positive outcome when asked about Davies’ position.

“In principle, we are positive,” Freund told Sky Germany.

The comments represent a change in the tone surrounding Davies’ future, with the player previously being strongly associated with a move away from Bayern Munich. Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenburg has also reported that Manchester United are aware Davies could sign a new contract with the German club.

That possibility would be a significant development for Bayern, who have retained Davies since bringing him to the club in 2019. Since then, he has made 215 appearances and helped the club win several trophies, including the UEFA Champions League.

Davies’ contract situation has therefore created uncertainty for clubs monitoring his availability. Real Madrid’s reported interest has been joined by that of Manchester United and Liverpool, but Bayern’s confidence could mean the highly sought-after left-back remains in Munich beyond the current season.

For now, Davies is still under contract with Bayern Munich for the final six months of his deal. His next decision will determine whether one of Europe’s leading clubs can secure his signature or whether he continues his career with the Bundesliga giants.
