Almería head coach Rubi has expressed his frustration with the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) after his club was not formally informed of midfielder Dion Lopy’s inclusion in Pape Thiaw’s squad for the upcoming international fixtures.
Lack of Communication Sparks Tension
Lopy, who has been absent from the Senegal national team since June 2024, was recalled by Thiaw for the Lions’ matches against Sudan on March 22 and Togo on March 25. However, Almería claim they were not officially notified of the midfielder’s selection, leaving Rubi angered by what he perceives as a breach of protocol.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Rubi did not hide his displeasure.
“It’s clear that a player leaving for international duty impacts the team,” he said. “We are happy for Lopy because every footballer dreams of representing their country. But the issue is that we have not received any official communication. No one has informed us. That’s not how things should be done, and we are very angry. Senegal did not follow the proper procedures with us.”
Almería’s Fixture Congestion Adds to Frustration
Unlike many top European leagues, Spain’s second division will not pause for the international break in March. Almería, who have struggled to regain form after a difficult start to the season, are currently seventh in LaLiga 2 and preparing for a crucial set of fixtures.
The Andalusian club will face Real Zaragoza on Saturday afternoon (17:30 GMT) before traveling to Burgos on March 21. With Lopy expected to be in Senegalese training camp by then, he will be unavailable for the second match, a situation that has further irritated the club’s management.
A Blow for Almería Amid Their Promotion Push
Almería’s frustration is compounded by their recent struggles, as they continue to fight for promotion back to LaLiga. Having failed to win in their last few league outings, the absence of key players during this critical period is a major setback for the team.
With tensions rising between Almería and the FSF, it remains to be seen whether the club will take further action regarding Lopy’s call-up or if this dispute will be resolved amicably. For now, Rubi and his squad must adjust to the loss of one of their midfielders as they navigate a crucial stage of their season.
