Angola’s rebuilding project under Aliou Cissé is set to gather momentum, with the national team coach preparing for a European tour aimed at securing the international futures of promising dual-national players ahead of a new competitive cycle.

Aliou Cissé, who recently took charge of the Palancas Negras after departing his role with Libya, is expected to spend the coming weeks meeting players and representatives across several European leagues.

The objective is clear: identify and persuade eligible talents to commit their senior international careers to Angola as the federation seeks to reverse years of underwhelming continental performances.

Among the standout names on Cissé’s radar is highly rated teenager Cardoso Varela. The 17-year-old, born in Luanda, has emerged as one of Angola’s most exciting prospects despite developing his career abroad.

Currently on the books of Dinamo Zagreb, Varela has already made 12 appearances in the Croatian top flight this season, drawing attention for his pace and technical quality in wide attacking roles.

Although Varela was born in Angola, his international pathway has so far been tied to Portugal. He acquired Portuguese citizenship in 2022 and has featured for the country at both Under-15 and Under-17 levels.

His performances at youth level have been particularly notable, as he was part of the Portugal squad that finished runners-up at the 2024 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Cyprus, making him one of the youngest members of that side.

Cissé’s recruitment drive comes at a crucial time for Angolan football. The national team has struggled for consistency on the continental stage, exiting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the group phase after collecting just two points from three matches.

Historically, Angola have qualified for ten editions of the tournament, with their best achievements coming in quarter-final runs in 2008, 2010 and 2023.

The appointment of Cissé, who famously guided Senegal to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title, signals a renewed ambition within the Angolan federation.

His mandate extends beyond immediate results, focusing instead on building a competitive and sustainable squad capable of re-establishing Angola as a serious force in African football.
