Alhassan Yusuf brace powers Nigeria to fourth Unity Cup title
Nigeria put their recent World Cup qualifying frustration behind them by successfully defending the Unity Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Jamaica in south London on Saturday.
While football fans around the world focused on events in Budapest and the UEFA Champions League final, the Super Eagles quietly completed another successful Unity Cup campaign, claiming the trophy for a fourth time with an emphatic display.
Eric Chelle’s side may still be grappling with the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but they showed no signs of a hangover as they swept aside Jamaica with a dominant second-half performance.
The Super Eagles needed just four minutes to take control of the contest. A long throw from the left flank caused problems in the Jamaican penalty area, and after goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke could only parry a flick-on at his near post, Alhassan Yusuf reacted quickest to fire home the rebound.
Azeez shines as Nigeria take charge
The match struggled to reach great heights in terms of overall quality, but Nigeria’s superior organisation and moments of attacking flair ensured they remained comfortably in command.
Jamaica felt they should have been awarded a penalty in the first half after Arthur Okonkwo collided with Kaheim Dixon while attempting to deal with a loose ball inside the area. However, the referee waved away the appeals, allowing Nigeria to preserve their advantage.
As the game progressed, the Super Eagles grew in confidence, with Femi Azeez emerging as the standout performer on the pitch. The winger consistently troubled Jamaica’s defence and provided the spark that transformed Nigeria’s attacking play.
His influence was rewarded midway through the second half when he burst past his marker on the left, reached the byline and delivered an inviting cross that Terem Moffi headed home from close range to double the lead.
Yusuf seals emphatic victory
With Jamaica struggling to mount a response, Nigeria continued to dictate proceedings and looked the more dangerous side whenever they ventured forward.
Yusuf completed his brace deep into stoppage time, putting the finishing touches on an impressive display and confirming a comfortable victory for the defending champions.
The result secured another Unity Cup triumph for the Super Eagles and offered supporters a welcome reminder of the talent within Chelle’s squad.
Although the summer will not include a World Cup adventure, Nigeria ensured they ended this campaign with silverware and renewed optimism for the future.
