ladimir Petkovic has named three goalkeepers—Anthony Mandrea, Alexandre Oukidja, and Alexis Guendouz—for Algeria’s March 2025 training camp, sparking debate over the ongoing uncertainty in the position since the departure of Raïs M’Bolhi.
Mandrea’s Struggles at Club Level
Mandrea, who appears to be first choice on paper, has endured a difficult campaign.
Having lost his starting role at SM Caen at the end of 2024, he has since reclaimed his place but faces an uphill battle with the club languishing at the bottom of Ligue 2.
With relegation to the National League looming, concerns persist over whether he is the right option to be Algeria’s number one.
Oukidja’s Lack of Game Time
The situation is even more concerning for Oukidja. The 36-year-old Metz goalkeeper has not featured in a single match in 2025, with his last appearance dating back to December 14, 2024.
His lack of match fitness raises doubts about his return to the national team, particularly after previously announcing his international retirement before later reversing his decision.
Guendouz: The Most Reliable Choice?
Among the trio, Guendouz has enjoyed the most consistent season. Playing for Persepolis in Iran, the former CR Belouizdad shot-stopper has featured in 30 matches, keeping 11 clean sheets.
While his performances have been commendable, the lower profile of the Iranian league could affect how his form is perceived.
Overlooking Domestic League Talent
Petkovic’s decision to exclude goalkeepers from the Algerian domestic league has also raised eyebrows.
Oussama Benbot of USM Alger, a regular in previous squads, has been overlooked despite his consistency.
Meanwhile, Abdelatif Ramdane of MC Alger has impressed in the CAF Champions League, recording six clean sheets in eight matches—yet he too has not been called up.
Who Will Start?
With none of the selected goalkeepers in ideal form, the battle for the starting spot remains wide open.
Petkovic faces a tough decision in a position that continues to lack a clear and undisputed number one.
