Algeria assess squad options as Rayan Ait-Nouri misses Togo double-header

Algeria head coach Brahim Hemdani has made two changes of profile to his squad for the next two Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers, handing first call-ups to CSKA Moscow defender Mohamed Azzi and Deportivo Alaves forward Abderrahman Rebbach.

Hemdani’s selection also includes the return of five players left out of September’s squad: goalkeeper Oussama Benbot, defender Rafik Belghali, midfielders Hicham Boudaoui and Yacine Titraoui, and forward Fares Ghedjemis.

However, Rayan Ait-Nouri, the Manchester City defender, remains absent, while Luca Zidane has also not been selected.

Algeria currently lead Group I on four points, ahead of Zambia and Togo on three each. Burundi are bottom with one point.

The Fennecs will host Togo at the Hocine-Ait-Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou on 14 November before travelling to Lome three days later. The fixtures are important for Algeria’s hopes of strengthening their position at the top of the group and moving closer to qualification for the 2027 tournament.

Former coach Azzedine Ait Djoudi, who has managed several clubs in the Moroccan and Algerian leagues and previously led the Algeria Olympic team, said the squad showed a measured attempt to widen Hemdani’s options.

Azzi’s inclusion gives the coach an opportunity to assess a new defensive profile, particularly in terms of tactical discipline, handling transitions and adapting to the demands of international football. Rebbach, meanwhile, could offer different attacking qualities, including movement without the ball, use of space and involvement in build-up play in the final third.

His presence may provide Algeria with another way to break down a compact defence, although neither player’s first call-up guarantees a place in the starting XI. Their ability to adapt quickly to Hemdani’s methods and the demands of the squad will be significant.

Benbot’s return increases competition for the goalkeeper’s position. Hemdani has indicated that recent playing time at club level is a major factor in his decisions, rather than international experience alone.

Belghali gives Algeria another defensive option, while Boudaoui’s ability to recover possession, cover space and link defensive and attacking phases could be particularly valuable in Lome, where the visitors may face greater pressure and more opportunities for Togo to counter-attack.

Titraoui adds another midfield option, offering variation in possession, passing and movement. Having both players available gives Hemdani greater flexibility to adjust his approach between the home match, when Algeria will be expected to take the initiative, and the away fixture.

Ghedjemis could be used either from the start or as an impact substitute. His contribution will be assessed not only through goals, but also through his movement, pressing and ability to create space for team-mates during a demanding schedule.

Ait-Nouri’s continued absence remains one of the most debated decisions. His pace, technical ability and willingness to advance with the ball can create overloads on the flank, but his attacking positioning can also require careful defensive cover.

Ait Djoudi said the decision should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a dispute. Hemdani may favour a different tactical balance or believe other players are currently more competitively prepared.

Luca Zidane’s omission similarly reflects the emphasis on regular club football. It does not necessarily close the door on a future return, with improved availability and increased playing time potentially strengthening his case.

Hemdani’s main challenge will be to turn this mixture of new faces and returning players into a coherent side capable of controlling midfield, taking attacking chances and remaining defensively sound. The conclusion of the squad analysis refers to Algeria’s aim of consolidating top spot in Group G and taking another step towards qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.
