Carlos Baleba to miss AFCON qualifiers

Cameroon have suffered a major setback ahead of their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Namibia, with midfielder Carlos Baleba ruled out through injury.

The Manchester United midfielder sustained the injury on Tuesday, November 3, during his side’s 3-2 victory over Roma in the Champions League. Baleba was forced off after experiencing pain and immediately grabbed the upper part of his thigh, raising concerns about a possible hamstring problem.

Subsequent reports indicate that the 22-year-old has suffered a partial hamstring tear and is expected to spend at least six weeks on the sidelines.

His absence means he will miss Cameroon’s upcoming training camp and the two qualifiers against Namibia on November 12 and 16, as the Indomitable Lions continue their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON.

The Cameroon national team confirmed his unavailability on Friday, November 6, leaving head coach David Pagou to make changes to his squad ahead of the important fixtures.

To fill the void left by Baleba, Pagou has handed a call-up to midfielder Ryan Fosso, who will have an opportunity to impress as Cameroon prepare for the two encounters.

Baleba’s absence is a blow to the Indomitable Lions, given his importance in midfield and his ability to provide energy, physicality and control in the centre of the pitch.
