Algeria international Aïssa Mandi begins new chapter at Levante
Algeria international Aïssa Mandi has completed a return to La Liga after signing for Levante on a free transfer following the end of his spell with French club Lille.
The experienced defender becomes Levante’s latest addition ahead of the new season, ending speculation over his future after leaving Lille as a free agent.
The Spanish club confirmed the move on Thursday, announcing that Mandi has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2028.
The transfer marks a return to familiar surroundings for the 34-year-old, who previously established himself as one of La Liga’s most experienced defenders during successful spells with Real Betis and Villarreal before moving to France.
Levante will become the fifth club of Mandi’s professional career after his previous appearances for Stade de Reims, Real Betis, Villarreal and Lille.
The newly signed defender joins a Levante side looking to strengthen its defensive options after finishing 16th in last season’s Spanish top flight.
Under head coach Luís Castro, the club has moved to add experience to its squad, with Mandi expected to bring leadership and a wealth of top-level experience.
His arrival follows two seasons at Lille, where he became an important figure in the squad.
During his time in northern France, Mandi earned the appreciation of the club’s supporters and was voted Lille’s Player of the Season for the 2025-26 campaign.
Despite that recognition, he opted not to extend his contract, allowing him to leave as a free agent after the agreement expired.
His departure from Lille had been anticipated since early July, paving the way for his return to Spanish football.
Mandi is no stranger to La Liga, having amassed 206 appearances during his previous spells in Spain. His extensive experience in the division is expected to prove valuable as Levante prepares for another demanding campaign.
On the international stage, the defender also remains one of Algeria’s most accomplished players.
With 122 international appearances, Mandi is the most-capped player in the history of the Algerian national team. His consistency over many years has made him a key figure for the Desert Warriors, although questions surrounding his international future have emerged following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The veteran defender faced criticism from some supporters over his performances during the tournament, but unlike captain Riyad Mahrez, he has not publicly announced any decision regarding his future with the national team.
For now, Mandi’s immediate focus shifts back to club football as he begins another chapter in Spain. After successful spells with both Betis and Villarreal, the experienced centre-back will now look to use his knowledge of La Liga to help Levante strengthen their defensive unit in the seasons ahead.
