Alexis Mac Allister reveals Liverpool contract disappointment

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister says he was “very, very sad” after being told the club was not in a position to offer him a new contract, despite having two years remaining on his current deal.

The 27-year-old also confirmed there was a chance he could have left Liverpool before the start of the season, following reports linking him with a move away from Anfield. Manchester City were among the clubs reportedly interested in the Argentina international, who won the 2022 World Cup and was a finalist at the 2026 World Cup.

Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton for around £35m and impressed during his first two seasons at the club. He played a part in their Premier League title success in 2024/25.

However, his form declined last season and he faced significant criticism as a result. That led to speculation that Liverpool could be prepared to sell him, although Mac Allister has now made clear that he remains committed to the club.

“There was a chance, as I think everyone knows,” Mac Allister told reporters when asked whether he could have left Liverpool.

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad.”

Mac Allister said the failure to agree a new deal had been difficult, particularly after the success and challenges he has shared with Liverpool.

“It’s really sad. We won a Premier League title together. We went through difficult times together. We will see what happens.

“Of course there is still time, the fans don’t need to worry I will give 100 percent until my last day.

“There were options to leave, right now I am in the right club.”

He added that his affection for Liverpool and the city had played a major role in his decision to stay.

“I love this club. I love being here, I love the fans.

“As a player, it sometimes happens that you’re at a club for a long long time and you don’t realise where you are.

“That doesn’t happen to me. I know very well that this is an amazing club, that this city has something very special and of course I love being here.”

Mac Allister has also spoken positively about working under new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, describing the Spaniard as “something special”.

The midfielder said Iraola had already demonstrated a clear vision during pre-season and praised the way he has approached both training and matches.

“Definitely since I came to pre-season I worked under Andoni I could see something special,” Mac Allister said on Iraola.

“I said before he is a really good coach, he knows very well what he wants to do. We are trying to get there.

“I haven’t had any conversations with him about it, but when I see the way he wants us to play and train I think we can have a successful year which is why I think this is the right place to be.”

Despite the uncertainty over his contract, Mac Allister indicated that he believes Liverpool remains the correct club for him and promised to continue giving full effort for the remainder of his time there.
