Al-Nassr head coach Jorge Jesus has defended his decision to leave Senegal international Sadio Mané out of the squad for their Saudi Pro League defeat to Al-Qadsiah, a result that has reopened the title race.

The league leaders were targeting a 17th consecutive victory heading into the fixture, but suffered a 3-1 loss without one of their key attacking players.

Mané, despite being available and part of the wider group, was not included in the matchday squad, prompting questions following the unexpected defeat.

Jesus addressed the situation in his post-match press conference, explaining that the decision was based on player management and recent fitness concerns.

“I decided not to include Mané. He is the player who has played the most games this season and he contracted the flu after returning from international duty,” he said.

The Portuguese manager emphasised that the choice was part of a broader strategy aimed at managing the physical condition of his squad during a demanding period of the season.

Mané has been one of Al-Nassr’s most frequently used players, making him a candidate for rest as the club navigates a tight schedule.

However, the absence of the Senegalese forward was felt on the pitch, as Al-Nassr were unable to maintain their winning run.

The defeat has narrowed the gap at the top of the table, increasing pressure in the closing stages of the campaign.

Jesus also pointed out that squad rotation has been applied to other key figures in recent weeks. He noted that players such as Cristiano Ronaldo have previously been rested, suggesting that Mané’s omission was consistent with the team’s approach to workload management.

Despite the rationale, the outcome has sparked debate, particularly given the significance of the match in the context of the title race.

The decision highlights the delicate balance between preserving player fitness and maintaining competitive momentum.

As the season enters its decisive phase, Al-Nassr will need to respond quickly to avoid further setbacks.

The focus will now shift to upcoming fixtures, where squad selection and player availability are likely to remain under close scrutiny.

For Mané, the expectation is that he will return to action once fully recovered, as Al-Nassr seek to regain control of their campaign and push towards securing the league title.
