Al-Nassr reconsider Bento transfer as goalkeeping uncertainty gives Brazilian another chance

Al-Nassr have reportedly abandoned plans to sell Brazilian goalkeeper Bento Matheus during the current summer transfer window, with uncertainty surrounding Nawaf Al-Aqidi and the lack of a suitable local replacement influencing the club’s decision.

The Saudi newspaper Al-Youm reports that the developments have forced Al-Nassr’s management to reassess its plans for the goalkeeper, who now appears set to remain with the club for another season.

Al-Nassr are seeking to preserve the core of their squad ahead of a campaign that will feature a demanding schedule of domestic and continental commitments. That workload has made it difficult for the club to allow an established member of the squad to leave without first securing an adequate replacement.

Bento Matheus had previously been considered a potential departure during the January transfer window. Genoa showed interest in signing the goalkeeper, but the proposed move ultimately failed to materialise and the Brazilian stayed at Al-Nassr.

His continued presence at the club at that stage also followed concerns over Nawaf Al-Aqidi’s declining form. Those concerns left Al-Nassr reluctant to lose another senior option in goal and encouraged the club to retain Bento rather than take a risk in an important position.

A similar situation has now emerged during the current summer window. Bento was again among the players who could have been sold, but the latest uncertainty surrounding Al-Aqidi has once more altered the club’s calculations.

The difficulty of finding a local goalkeeper capable of meeting the required standard has added to the case for keeping Bento. Al-Nassr therefore appear to have stepped back from the idea of selling him, at least for the time being.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has, in effect, avoided a move away from the club for a second time. Circumstances within Al-Nassr have played a decisive role in extending his stay, giving Bento another opportunity to continue his career with the Saudi side in the new season.

That season is expected to bring significant challenges for Al-Nassr, given the number of competitions on their schedule. Maintaining a reliable goalkeeping department will be particularly important as the club attempts to compete on both the domestic and continental fronts.

For Bento, the latest developments represent another unexpected reprieve. After previously coming close to joining Genoa and then being considered for a summer transfer, he now looks likely to remain part of Al-Nassr’s plans because the club has not found a convincing alternative and continues to face uncertainty over Al-Aqidi.
