Al-Ittihad manager Jens Vissing is under mounting pressure after his side suffered a 4-1 home defeat by Al Ain in the AFC Champions League Elite, prompting angry supporters to call for the German coach to be dismissed.
The result was not the only source of frustration for the Al-Ittihad fans. They were also unhappy with the team’s performance and Vissing’s decisions during the match, which raised fresh questions about whether he can lead the club through the next stage of the competition.
Reaction on the social media platform X was particularly severe after the final whistle. Supporters criticised the way Vissing managed the game, with some using strong language to describe his choices and even referring to him as a “criminal”.
The starting line-up was another major focus of the criticism. Many fans called for Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena to be given a more prominent role in upcoming matches, including a place in the starting XI, as they believe he deserves a greater opportunity to make an attacking impact.
However, the most frequent demand was for the club’s management to remove Vissing. A significant section of the supporters felt Al-Ittihad’s display against Al Ain required immediate action rather than allowing the current situation to continue.
Al Ain took the lead in the 17th minute when Alejandro Romero “Kaku” produced an excellent finish. Rafael Rodriguez then doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute, leaving Al-Ittihad facing a substantial deficit before half-time.
Al-Ittihad responded after the interval and reduced the arrears through Marwan Al-Sahafi in the 53rd minute. He converted an opportunity created by Houssem Aouar to give the home side hope of recovering from the difficult first half.
That hope lasted only five minutes. Al Ain restored their two-goal advantage in the 58th minute when Al-Ittihad defender Jan-Carlo Simic scored an own goal.
As Al-Ittihad searched for another way back into the match, Al Ain were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute. Matias Palacios converted from the spot to complete the 4-1 victory.
The result moved Al Ain to 12 points and left them alone at the top of the West section of the AFC Champions League Elite. Al-Ittihad remain ninth on four points, with their hopes of progressing made more difficult by the damaging defeat.
Vissing now faces increasing pressure not only because of the scoreline, but also because of the growing gap between the expectations of Al-Ittihad’s supporters and the performances being produced on the pitch.
With fans demanding his departure while others call for changes to his tactical decisions, the coming matches are expected to play a significant role in determining his future with the club.
