Al-Hilal strengthen lead as Al-Ittihad face defensive and disciplinary questions after 3-2 classic

Al-Hilal strengthened their position at the top of the Roshn Saudi League with a 3-2 victory over Al-Ittihad, while their rivals suffered their first defeat of the season and were left facing questions over both their defending and the events that followed the final whistle.

The result lifted Al-Hilal to 21 points, extending their advantage over Al-Ittihad to four points. For Simone Inzaghi, the win also provided an important boost after recent criticism, particularly as it came against a direct rival in a match that placed considerable pressure on both sides.

Al-Hilal’s attacking players made the difference, with Gabriel Martinelli, Ollie Watkins and Crysencio Summerville all making important contributions during the contest. Their influence helped the leaders claim a significant victory, although the performance also highlighted areas that Inzaghi must address.

Despite their attacking success, Al-Hilal did not produce a completely convincing defensive display. Al-Ittihad scored twice and threatened to increase the pressure during the closing stages. Steven Bergwijn reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 89th minute, ensuring a tense finish and exposing some uncertainty in Al-Hilal’s defence.

Defensive concerns for Al-Ittihad

The defeat ended Al-Ittihad’s unbeaten start to the league campaign and left them four points behind Al-Hilal. The most immediate concern for coach Yens Vissers will be the space allowed in the defensive line and the individual errors that enabled their opponents to create and convert opportunities.

Al-Ittihad will need to review their defensive positioning, particularly the way they protect the areas behind the full-backs. Those weaknesses gave Al-Hilal opportunities to reach the goal and ultimately proved costly in a match of major importance to the title race.

There were nevertheless positive signs in Al-Ittihad’s attacking play. They fought their way back into the game through Youssef En-Nesyri before Bergwijn’s late penalty brought them within one goal. The response showed that the team remained capable of threatening Al-Hilal even while trailing.

Vissers will therefore be expected to build on those attacking strengths while correcting the defensive problems that contributed to the loss. The defeat was a serious setback, but the manner of Al-Ittihad’s response offered some encouragement.

Tensions after the final whistle

The controversy continued after the match, when Al-Ittihad players confronted referee Khalid Al-Turais. Their protests centred on the decision to end the game after a throw-in had been delayed during the final seconds.

The situation escalated as several Al-Ittihad players challenged the referee. Goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic reportedly attempted to confront him before security personnel intervened to calm the incident.

The episode could create an additional problem for Al-Ittihad. The relevant authorities may review the incident using the match reports, with disciplinary action possible against those involved if the official reports establish breaches of the regulations.

Al-Hilal therefore emerged with a valuable victory, an enlarged lead and renewed confidence. Al-Ittihad, meanwhile, must address their defensive shortcomings and manage the aftermath of the post-match confrontation to prevent this defeat from developing into a wider crisis in the coming rounds.
