Al Ahly set to part ways with Jess Thorup after Champions League miss
Egyptian giants Al Ahly have reportedly taken the decision to end their collaboration with head coach Jess Thorup following a disappointing season that saw the club miss out on qualification for the CAF Champions League.
The 2025/26 campaign concluded on Wednesday with the Red Devils finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League, despite securing a final-day victory.
The result confirmed that the 13-time African champions will be absent from Africa’s premier club competition for the first time since 2003, with a place in the CAF Confederation Cup now awaiting them next season.
According to reports from WinWin, Al Ahly’s hierarchy have already resolved to part ways with the Danish tactician, even though he has submitted his technical and preparation plans for the upcoming campaign.
Thorup had expressed confidence in his position after the final league match, insisting he expected to remain in charge despite the club’s struggles.
“When I came to Al-Ahly, I believed in winning championships, and we started well by winning the Super Cup,” he said, as quoted by Ysscores. “However, the transfer period was not as expected, and a club of Al-Ahly’s stature should make everyone feel disappointed when there is a failure.”
“My contract with Al Ahly still extends for two more seasons, and I have already sent my comprehensive plan for the preparation and readiness period for the new season to the club’s management.”
Despite his comments, uncertainty now surrounds his future as the Egyptian giants prepare for a major reset following a rare season without Champions League football.
