Al Ahly’s participation in the Egyptian League hangs in the balance as the club threatens to withdraw from the competition if its request to postpone the highly anticipated summit clash against Zamalek is not granted.
The match, set for Tuesday in the first round of the coronation stage, has become a flashpoint in the ongoing scheduling dispute.
According to Article 24 of the Egyptian League regulations for the 2024-2025 season, any team that withdraws during the final stage faces severe repercussions. The rule stipulates automatic relegation to the lowest division in the following season and a two-season suspension from league participation.
Additionally, the club would be hit with a hefty fine of 20 million Egyptian pounds (approximately half a million US dollars) and would be liable for financial losses incurred from missed commercial and broadcasting revenues. Any points, goals scored, and goal differences from previous matches in the first stage would still count when determining the final team standings.
Further penalties outlined by the Disciplinary Committee, including accumulated yellow and red cards, would remain valid, potentially compounding the club’s challenges should it follow through with its withdrawal threat.
