Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro blocks move for Orlando Pirates players
Head coach of Al Ahly Jose Riveiro has decided not to sign players from former club Orlando Pirates.
The Spanish tactician recently joined Al Ahly on a two-year deal after ending his spell with the South African outfit. Riveiro replaced Marcel Koller, who was shown the exit door after a string of unimpressive result.
Speaking to the club’s TV channel, Jose Riveiro emphasized he has no plans to sign players from Orlando Pirates, expressing satisfaction with the squad at his folds.
“I want to give every player a chance. I haven’t asked a single player from Orlando to join Al Ahly. The current Al Ahly squad is excellent, and club president Mahmoud El-Khatib is always providing support to the team. I prefer to focus on working with those who are already here so they can compete in the near future,” the Spanish manager emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Spanish trainer and his outfit have already departed to the USA for the impending FIFA Club World Cup tournament.
The expanded 32-team tournament scheduled to take place at the USA runs from June 15 to July 13, 2025, with Al Ahly, Africa’s most decorated set to battle it out for the prestigious trophy.
Al Ahly have been paired in Group A against Inter Miami (USA), Palmeiras (Brazil) and FC Porto (Portugal). They will open their account against hosts, Inter Miami on June 15, 2025.
The Egyptian outfit is not just aiming for a deep run, but for continental pride and a shot at becoming the first African team to lift the new-format Club World Cup trophy.
