Aïssa Mandi’s performances for Lille have drawn widespread praise as the Algerian defender continues to establish himself as a key figure for both club and country at a time when defensive concerns are growing for the national team.

With injuries affecting Algeria’s defensive options, the vice-captain has emerged as one of the most reliable players available to head coach Vladimir Petkovic.

His current form has positioned him as a likely central figure for the national side in upcoming international commitments, particularly with important fixtures on the horizon.

Mandi’s influence has been especially evident in Ligue 1, where he has become one of Lille’s standout performers towards the end of the season.

His consistency has been recognised with a nomination for the 2026 Marc-Vivien Foé Award, which honours the best African player in the French top flight.

He is shortlisted alongside Paris FC winger Ilan Kebbal, underlining the level of competition for the accolade.

At club level, the 34-year-old has also seen his status rise within the squad.

Head coach Bruno Genesio has named him as the team’s third captain, a reflection of both his experience and his growing importance in the dressing room.

The former Real Betis defender has not only secured a regular role but has also gained recognition from the French media, who have acknowledged his strong performances in recent months.

Among those to praise him is journalist Salim Baungally, who admitted he had initially doubted Mandi’s return to Ligue 1.

Speaking on Radio Foot Internationale, Baungally said: “The longer we wait, the better he gets. Maybe he’ll be even better at 40.”

He also reflected on his earlier assessment of the player, adding: “Last year (summer 2024), when he arrived in Lille, I had my doubts. When I saw him mistime certain plays, not be well-positioned, I thought to myself, ‘Aïssa Mandi, at 32 or 33, wasn’t it a mistake to come back to Ligue 1 like that?’ At 34, he silenced me. Yes, he’s become completely reliable defensively again, and his distribution is excellent too. Along with his teammates, Mandi is now a key player for Lille.”

The defender’s resurgence has also been recognised by his coach.

Genesio highlighted both his technical qualities and his mentality, pointing to his perseverance as a defining factor in his success.

“He’s having an exemplary season with us, and with the national team as well. He’s an important part of our team. He hasn’t always been a starter here, but he’s always persevered. And for some time now, if not since the beginning of the season, he’s become a key player for our team,” Genesio said.

The Lille manager also underlined Mandi’s leadership qualities, describing him as a player who influences the team without needing to be outspoken.

“He’s not a very exuberant guy, but he gets his words right. And he has a natural authority, a natural leadership over the team. He’s also someone who inspires confidence when he’s on the pitch,” he added.

Despite the individual recognition, Mandi has been reluctant to focus on personal accolades.

Speaking recently about his award nomination, he made clear that his priority remains the collective success of his team.

“The prize? It’s not something that interests me, until proven otherwise. Football is a team sport, so rewarding an individual, I’ve never understood it,” he said.

His comments reflect a consistent approach throughout his career, with the defender often emphasising teamwork over personal achievement.

That attitude, combined with his experience, has contributed to his growing influence within the Lille squad.

Elsewhere, attention has also turned to fellow Algerian international Nabil Bentaleb, who could be nearing a return to action.

Although details of the operation that recently sidelined him have not been disclosed, there are indications that he may be available again soon.

Promotional material for Lille’s upcoming Ligue 1 fixture against Le Havre, scheduled for Sunday as part of the 32nd matchday, features Bentaleb prominently alongside his teammates.

The image has raised expectations that the midfielder could be included in the squad, although confirmation is expected from Genesio in his pre-match press conference.

As Lille approach the final stages of the season, Mandi’s form continues to stand out, both as a defensive presence and as a leader within the squad.

His performances have not only strengthened his club’s position but have also reinforced his importance to the Algerian national team at a critical time.
