Aïssa Mandi says returning to the World Cup with Algeria remains a lifelong ambition as the LOSC defender prepares for what will be his second appearance at the tournament, twelve years after featuring in Brazil 2014.

The experienced centre-back, who has become Algeria’s most capped player with more than 109 international appearances, reflected on his long international career and the emotional significance of representing his country on football’s biggest stage.

“It’s definitely the most beautiful competition. Representing your country internationally is something extraordinary. I was lucky enough to play in one and participating in a second World Cup is still a childhood dream,” he said.

Mandi’s journey with the national team has spanned more than a decade, marked by highs and lows for the “Greens”, including the disappointment of missing out on the 2022 World Cup following a dramatic playoff defeat to Cameroon.

Reflecting on that period, the defender acknowledged the setbacks but highlighted the resilience that has defined Algeria’s response in the years since.

“We went through some tough times after 2014. It took a lot of hard work and perseverance to get back to the World Cup. We never gave up, and that’s part of the identity of this team and this nation,” he said.

Now one of the senior figures in the squad, Mandi believes his responsibility extends beyond his performances on the pitch, particularly in guiding younger players through the demands of international football.

“We need to make them understand what it means to wear this jersey. You have to give 100% for the country and for the people. It’s a responsibility we have as veterans,” he explained.

Looking ahead to the tournament in North America, the defender says Algeria’s focus is on unity, determination and pride as they prepare to compete on the global stage once again.

The aim, he added, is clear: “to showcase a team that fights to the very end, that never gives up, and that makes an entire country proud.”

For Mandi, the upcoming World Cup represents not just another tournament, but the continuation of a journey built on persistence, setbacks and a deep connection to the national shirt.
