Agbonlahor backs Rosenior’s decision to drop Fernandez
Gabby Agbonlahor has thrown his support behind Liam Rosenior following the Chelsea manager’s decisive move to drop Enzo Fernandez from key upcoming fixtures, describing the call as a strong statement of authority at Stamford Bridge.
Rosenior has confirmed that Fernandez will not be part of the squad for Chelsea’s FA Cup quarter-final tie against Port Vale, nor will he feature in the club’s crucial Premier League showdown with Manchester City.
The decision follows comments attributed to the Argentina international in which he openly discussed the prospect of a future move to Real Madrid, remarks the Chelsea boss believes crossed a clear boundary.
The firm disciplinary stance represents one of Rosenior’s most significant decisions since taking charge, particularly given Fernandez’s profile as a World Cup-winning midfielder and a central figure within the squad.
By sidelining such an influential presence ahead of two high-stakes encounters, the Chelsea manager has underlined his commitment to maintaining focus and discipline within the dressing room during a critical phase of the season.
Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, expressed admiration for the decision, suggesting it reinforces the principle that no individual outweighs the collective identity of the club. “I like it,” he said.
“It shows no player is bigger than the club, and people have been mocking Liam Rosenior that he’s a yes-man, that’s why they brought him in.
“But he’s made a big choice here because Enzo Fernandez, World Cup winner, probably a big character in the dressing room to drop him for two important games.”
Chelsea’s immediate test comes in the FA Cup, where progression is expected, but attention will quickly shift to the league clash against reigning champions Manchester City.
With the race for a top-five finish intensifying, the absence of Fernandez could have tangible consequences on the pitch, particularly against elite opposition.
Agbonlahor acknowledged the risk attached to the decision but maintained that the long-term message sent by the club outweighs any short-term concerns. “Yes, Port Vale, they win without him, but Manchester City is an important game – Chelsea need top five.
“They need their best players, so to drop him for that, I rate it highly from Liam Rosenior and the football club.”
