Vladimir Petkovic has addressed the controversy surrounding his Algeria squad for AFCON 2025 after leaving out Himad Abdelli and Nabil Bentaleb, two Ligue 1 players whose absences have triggered widespread debate among supporters.
Reaction across Algeria has remained intense since the squad announcement, with many fans and analysts questioning how the pair failed to make the final list.
Critics have argued that Abdelli and Bentaleb deserved inclusion ahead of players they view as less convincing at club or international level.
Social media reaction reflected the frustration. Content creator Chebli Ishaq questioned the selection logic, writing that Petkovic appeared to rate Houssem Aouar above Abdelli despite what he described as disappointing displays for both club and country.
He labelled the decision “an absolute disgrace.” Another supporter voiced concern over Bentaleb’s omission, stressing that the midfielder has enjoyed a strong start to the season and merited selection.
Petkovic responded directly to the criticism and explained the thinking behind his choices. The Algeria coach described both omissions as technical decisions rather than judgments on individual quality or commitment.
He insisted that the final squad reflects players who currently offer the most guarantees within his tactical framework.
“Bentaleb is a technical choice. With all the players I have available, I have more guarantees with those I have called up,” Petkovic said.
He applied the same reasoning to Abdelli, adding that both players remain under consideration should circumstances change.
“Abdelli? It’s the same reasons as Bentaleb. They must be ready to join us if necessary,” the coach explained, signalling that neither player has fallen out of favour permanently.
Petkovic also expressed frustration at the scale of the backlash and questioned the alternatives being proposed.
He challenged critics to consider which players they would remove to make space, asking whether Aouar or Maza should be excluded to accommodate Abdelli.
Despite the controversy, expectations around the Algerian national team remain high. The Fennecs enter AFCON 2025 with ambitions of reclaiming continental glory, and pressure continues to mount on the coaching staff to deliver results.
As the tournament approaches, Petkovic will hope performances on the pitch settle the debate.
For now, his selections stand, and Abdelli and Bentaleb remain on standby as Algeria prepare for one of the most closely watched campaigns in recent years.
