AFCON 2025: Simon Moses sets ambitious tone as Nigeria targets strong campaign
Simon Moses states that every Nigeria attacker “stays in top form” as the Super Eagles prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and attempt to move on from the disappointment of missing the 2026 World Cup.
Nigeria views the upcoming tournament in Morocco as a crucial opportunity to restore confidence and reassert its status among Africa’s elite.
Moses, who plays for Paris FC, stands on the brink of a fourth AFCON appearance if coach Éric Sékou Chelle includes him in the final squad.
He reflects on the moment with RMC Sport and says he treats the possibility as both a challenge and an honour.
He values the chance to represent his country again and hopes his performances earn him a place in the final selection.
The forward acknowledges the immense competition in Nigeria’s attacking department.
Chelle listed 23 forwards in his preliminary squad, a group that includes Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Victor Boniface.
Moses embraces the challenge rather than shying away from it and recognises the quality around him.
He speaks with confidence about the squad’s attacking strength.
“It’s huge, that’s true. Everyone is in top form. Without a doubt, it’s the best attack in Africa, but you could almost say in the world.
With Victor Osimhen, it’s a formidable attack. Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze are top-level,” he says.
Nigeria enters AFCON 2025 determined to erase the memory of its failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after a painful defeat to DR Congo in the final playoff.
Moses remembers the blow vividly and admits that the setback affected the entire squad. He calls it a difficult moment, especially because Nigeria missed out for the second consecutive time.
He insists that the team must channel that disappointment into motivation.
The Super Eagles aim to deliver a strong campaign in Morocco and fight for every result. Moses stresses the need for complete focus.
“There are no more small countries. Nothing is easier. Nobody comes here to get thrashed. Everyone can win, so we have to work even harder to win every match,” he says.
Nigeria will meet Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in Group C as the team begins its search for redemption and a deeper AFCON run.
