Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has dismissed claims that he insulted Moroccan fans during his team’s 3–1 extra-time victory over Benin in the AFCON 2025 Round of 16, insisting that a viral video circulating online was misinterpreted.
The controversy arose at Agadir’s Adrar Stadium after Mohamed Salah netted Egypt’s decisive third goal.
Cameras captured Hassan making hand gestures toward the stands, which some social media users suggested were aimed at Moroccan supporters, who were perceived to be cheering for Benin at points during the match.
The clip quickly stirred debate, particularly among Moroccan fans, despite Egypt enjoying strong backing from local crowds throughout the tournament.
Addressing the matter in his post-match press conference, Hassan said: “I thank the Egyptian and Moroccan fans who supported us throughout the match. The video that spread on social media was misunderstood. How could I attack Moroccan fans in Agadir after all the support we received? The Moroccan crowd was wonderful with us.”
Hassan clarified that his gestures were purely celebratory, not directed at any group, and reiterated his respect for Moroccan supporters, highlighting the positive role they have played for Egypt since the group stage.
Egypt’s hard-fought win sent them into the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of Cote d’Ivoire vs Burkina Faso.
