Head coach of Benin Gernot Rohr has his outfit fighting spirt despite succumbing to a defeat to Egypt in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite bowing out of the tournament, the Squirrels showcased determination and resilience, forcing the match to extra-time on Monday.
The Pharaohs, who are in search of their eighth AFCON title opened the scoring in the second half before Benin pulled parity in the latter part of the game, forcing an extra-time.
However, it was the North African country, who prevailed in the extra-time, inflicting a 3-1 win over their opponent to book a place in the quarterfinals.
Speaking after the match, the German tactician eulogized his outfit fighting spirit despite falling short to the Egyptian national team.
“Our match against Egypt was a real fight and battle. The match was difficult for both teams, and they played good football.”
“We don’t have the same individual level as Egypt, especially since our best striker, Steve Mounier, was absent. He would have helped us a lot in a match like this and in aerial duels.”
“I am proud of the players and their fighting spirit, and this is a positive thing for our future, but the Egyptian national team deserved to win.”
Egypt defeated Benin in a match that went to extra time, which was held at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir.
Egypt will play in the quarter-finals next Saturday against the winner of Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.
