AFCON 2025: Fan Zone collapses days before start of tournament in Morocco
A fan zone in Casablanca, set up to welcome supporters ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), collapsed following severe weather just five days before the tournament kicks off.
The Anfa Park site, intended to host thousands of fans with giant screens, entertainment areas, and interactive activities, suffered extensive damage after strong winds and heavy rain battered the city overnight.
Several structures and facilities were affected, raising immediate safety concerns.
The zone, organized by Inwi—an official partner of Moroccan football—was part of a nationwide initiative to create festive spaces for supporters during the tournament. Reports indicate the collapse was linked to the same storm that damaged infrastructure across Casablanca.
Local authorities swiftly secured the area and began assessing the damage.
Efforts are now focused on repairing and reinforcing the structures in time for the opening match on Sunday, December 21.
Officials have assured the public that safety measures will be heightened to prevent further incidents.
Despite this setback, tournament organizers remain confident that Morocco will successfully host AFCON for the second time in its history.
