Dortmund held by Villarreal as Champions League tie remains goalless at half-time

Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal were level at 0-0 at half-time in their UEFA Champions League meeting at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, after a competitive opening 45 minutes in which neither side could find a breakthrough.

The first half was closely contested, with both teams involved in an energetic battle but unable to turn their opportunities into a goal. Dortmund had the greater sense of urgency as the interval approached, yet Villarreal’s defence remained intact and the visitors reached the break without having conceded.

Dortmund were forced to make a change in the 26th minute when Karetsas went off injured. The setback disrupted the home side’s plans, but it did not prevent them from continuing to press as the first half entered its final stages.

The German side increased the pressure late on and came within inches of taking the lead deep into stoppage time. In the second minute of added time, Guirassy moved into a promising position and looked set to break the deadlock.

However, Villarreal’s goalkeeper produced an impressive save to deny him. The intervention preserved the Spanish side’s clean sheet and ensured the teams went into the dressing rooms level.

The result at the interval leaves the match finely poised, with both Dortmund and Villarreal still needing to find a way through after a tense and evenly matched first period. Dortmund will have to manage the impact of Karetsas’ injury while maintaining the attacking momentum they generated before the break.

Villarreal, meanwhile, can take encouragement from their goalkeeper’s late intervention and the fact that they have kept Dortmund scoreless at Signal Iduna Park. The visitors have also ensured that the tie remains open heading into the second half.

Despite the absence of goals, the opening period was not short of intensity. The two sides contested the match strongly from the outset, but neither was able to create the decisive moment needed to take control.

Guirassy’s chance represented Dortmund’s clearest opportunity before half-time, although it was ultimately matched by an important defensive contribution from Villarreal’s goalkeeper. With the score still 0-0, everything remains to be decided after the interval.
