Libya Withdraws from Hosting 2017 Africa Cup of Nations
Libya has officially withdrawn from hosting the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations due to ongoing political instability, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed.
In response, CAF has reopened the bidding process, giving interested nations until September 30 to submit their applications to host the continental tournament.
Zambia, previously considered a strong candidate after unsuccessful bids to host the 2019 and 2021 editions, has ruled itself out of contention. “That is something we cannot do,” said Zambia Football Association president Kalusha Bwalya.
Algeria, another country overlooked for both the 2019 and 2021 tournaments, is now seen as a potential front-runner to replace Libya and host the 2017 edition.
