Gervinho Confident in Ivory Coast’s Supremacy Despite World Cup Exit
Roma winger Gervinho has expressed confidence in the future of the Ivorian national team, despite a disappointing early exit from the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Speaking to FIFA.com, the 27-year-old reflected on both his strong club form and the challenges the Elephants faced on the international stage.
“This is my second season with Roma, where I feel comfortable and where I want to continue playing in the future,” said Gervinho, who has already recorded three goals and three assists in all competitions this season.
Turning to Ivory Coast’s campaign in Brazil, Gervinho admitted it took time to come to terms with the heartbreak of missing out on a place in the Round of 16. “We were determined to qualify, but that last-minute penalty against Greece was a tough blow. We tried to move on during the holidays, but it wasn’t easy.”
Despite the setback, Gervinho remains convinced that Ivory Coast still lead the way on the continent. “For me, the best team in Africa is still Ivory Coast. The quality of our players is not in question.”
He also paid tribute to former captain Didier Drogba, who retired from international football after the World Cup. “Didier was our captain and made a great contribution. He’ll leave a big void, but we have to look forward,” Gervinho said.
