Abrahams reveals Duba’s advice before Chiefs free-kick

Kaizer Chiefs winger Faiz Abrahams has revealed that teammate Wandile Duba urged him to shoot rather than deliver a cross before the free-kick that helped his side take a 3-1 lead against Siwelele FC in the Betway Premiership.

Abrahams, 21, joined the Glamour Boys from Stellenbosch FC on a season-long loan, with Kaizer Chiefs holding an option to make the move permanent at Naturena.

The attacker has made two appearances in the Betway Premiership since arriving, playing 45 minutes in each match.

He was introduced from the bench during Sunday’s meeting with Siwelele FC at Dobsonville Stadium and quickly made an impact. Abrahams’ free-kick found the net after coming off the head of Siwelele FC goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu.

The effort was subsequently recorded as an own goal, but it still contributed to Kaizer Chiefs establishing a 3-1 advantage in the match.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Abrahams explained the brief exchange he had with Duba before taking the set-piece.

“When I went to take the free kick, [Wandile] Duba told me not to cross the ball for anyone but to try and score,” he said.

Abrahams said the moment was particularly satisfying after the work he had put in during training. He also stressed that he intends to maintain his effort and consistency as he seeks to establish himself at Kaizer Chiefs.

“It felt great because I have been working very hard. I’m just going to keep working hard and giving my all in training. I aim to stay consistent and always keep my performance levels up.”

The move to Naturena has given Abrahams an opportunity to compete for a longer-term place at the club after his spell with Stellenbosch FC. His early involvement has so far amounted to 90 minutes across two Betway Premiership fixtures, with his appearance against Siwelele FC providing a notable contribution from the substitutes’ bench.

Kaizer Chiefs will return to league action on Saturday, 12 September, when they travel to Limpopo to face Polokwane City. The fixture will be played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
