The Bankstown Lions club, a second-division team from the suburbs of Sydney, is grieving the loss of their young striker, Kodjo Etonam Adjassou. The Togolese player tragically collapsed and died during a match last Saturday.
At just 24 years old, Kodjo passed away only ten minutes into the game between his team and Spirit FC at Jensen Stadium.
Despite efforts from trainers to revive him, Kodjo did not survive, and the match was halted following the tragic incident.
Kodjo had recently joined the club after previously playing for Coffs Coast Tigers under coach Leo Braumgartner. He had also featured for Berries in the previous season.
Married and a father to a four-month-old daughter, Kodjo had spent several years in a refugee camp in Ghana before immigrating to Australia.
Condolences poured in from various quarters, including Football Australia and social media, expressing sympathy for Kodjo’s friends and family, as well as the Bankstown City FC community.
Rest in peace, Kodjo Etonam Adjassou. You will be dearly missed.
