José Gomes, the Portuguese coach of Zamalek, is gearing up for his first derby match against Al Ahly as the two rivals meet in the final of the Egyptian Cup (2022-2023).
The Cup summit will mark Gomes’ fourth match with Zamalek since his appointment as the team’s manager last February.
José Gomes’ Record in Derby Matches Before the Anticipated Summit Against Al Ahly:
José Gomes began his coaching career in the mid-1990s, nearly 30 years ago.
He has overseen numerous clubs both within Portugal and abroad.
The 53-year-old coach has led four clubs in local derby matches, including Desportivo Aves in Portugal, Al Taawoun and Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, alongside Almería in Spain.
In total, José Gomes has managed 13 derby matches, winning 5, losing 2, and drawing 6.

- Desportivo Aves (Portugal): José Gomes managed a single derby match against Gil Vicente in the Portuguese second division in 2007, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
- Al Taawoun (Saudi Arabia): José Gomes faced Al Raed 8 times during 3 coaching stints (2014-2016, 2017-2018, 2021-2022).
In the first stint, Al Taawoun won twice (2-0 and 3-1) in 2015, while both teams drew twice (0-0 in 2014, 1-1 in 2016).
In the second stint, the “Derby of Buraidah” ended in draws (2-2) in 2017 and 2018.
In the third stint, Gomes lost (3-5) in 2021 before securing a 3-0 victory in 2022.
- Al Ahli (Saudi Arabia): The coach’s strongest derby performance to date was in the Jeddah derby between Al Ahli and Al Ittihad in 2016, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
- Almería (Spain): José Gomes engaged in three Andalusian derbies while coaching Almería in the 2020-2021 season.
He won twice against Malaga in the Spanish second division (3-0 and 3-1) but lost to Sevilla (0-1) in the Copa del Rey.
