A majority of the continent’s top clubs have secured their spots in the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League, with Moroccan side Wydad, last season’s runner-up, being the sole exception after their exit in the group stage.
The qualified teams include reigning champions Al Ahly of Egypt, Tunisian giants Esperance, TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Ivorian club ASEC Mimosas, Petro Atletico from Angola, Young Africans from Tanzania, and Simba SC, also from Tanzania.
Wydad Casablanca’s failure to progress to the knockout stage came after finishing third in Group B, behind ASEC Mimosas and Simba SC.
Several other Arab teams also fell short of expectations, such as Egyptian side Pyramids FC, who finished last in Group A, Tunisian outfit Etoile du Sahel, who finished at the bottom of Group C, and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad, who ended up third in Group D.
The schedule for the quarterfinals draw of the 2024 CAF Champions League is expected to be announced in the coming days.
