Mpho Padime marked his first start for Orlando Pirates with the winning goal as the Buccaneers defeated Sekhukhune United in the Carling Knockout on Saturday afternoon.

The 19-year-old midfielder was handed a starting place by coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who chose him ahead of Oswin Appollis for the match at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

Ouaddou’s selection proved decisive, with Padime scoring the only goal of the contest in the first half. His display also earned him the Man of the Match award, along with a prize of R100 000.

The result gave the teenager a memorable introduction to the starting line-up and rewarded Ouaddou for choosing to rotate his squad.

The Orlando Pirates coach defended the decision during his post-match interview, explaining that he needed to manage a group of 40 players and maintain motivation throughout the squad.

“Look, it was an opportunity for us to give opportunity for Padime, Luthuli to see in your faces as well, people have to understand that we are managing a group of 40 players.

“So to keep the motivation you need to introduce some players Rapoo, we didn’t see him, we give him the opportunity, Mmolai you understand,” Ouaddou told SuperSport after the game.

Padime’s goal was his only shot of the match, according to Soccerway, but he completed all 24 of his passes.

He recorded 37 touches and contested eight duels during his contribution to Orlando Pirates’ victory over Sekhukhune United.

The performance ensured the young midfielder was recognised by the supporters, who voted him the game’s outstanding player and saw him collect the R100 000 award.
