Caribbean Football Union backs Gianni Infantino with 25 votes ahead of FIFA election

The Caribbean Football Union has endorsed Gianni Infantino’s bid to remain FIFA president, giving the Italian-Swiss official the support of 25 additional votes before the election on 18 March 2027.

The decision follows a formal consultation and approval process involving the union’s member associations. All 25 of its FIFA-affiliated members backed Infantino’s re-election at the next FIFA presidential election.

The Caribbean Football Union said: “Following a formal process of consultation and approval involving its member associations, the 25 member associations of the Caribbean Football Union affiliated to FIFA have expressed their collective support for the re-election of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president at the forthcoming 2027 presidential election.”

Infantino, 56, has led FIFA since 2016 and is now considered the leading candidate to win another term. The election will be held during the FIFA Congress in Rabat on 18 March 2027.

His position has strengthened after the Asian Football Confederation announced its support last month. The Caribbean Football Union followed with its endorsement this week, citing the governing body’s development work.

“The Caribbean Football Union recognises the development initiatives undertaken by FIFA, particularly investments in football infrastructure, technical programmes, competitions, youth and women’s football, and institutional capacity-building,” it said.

The union also said its member associations operate with limited financial and human resources, stressing “the importance of ensuring that the next development cycle delivers sustainable benefits to its member associations”.

Despite backing Infantino, the statement included a call for changes within football’s governing structures.

Call for transparency and reform

The Caribbean Football Union said: “In the same spirit, the Caribbean Football Union continues to call for greater transparency and good governance, and meaningful reforms within the football family.”

The warning comes after criticism of Infantino following the announcement of an unsuccessful project to establish a commercial company open to private-sector investors.

The union added: “The Caribbean Football Union offers its support to FIFA, with the hope that it will continue to strengthen accountability, uphold the highest standards of governance, and pursue the necessary reforms to ensure that every member association is fairly represented and taken into consideration.”

It said its position had been agreed collectively through consultation with its members.

“The Caribbean Football Union confirms that it has determined its collective position in consultation with its member associations, reflecting the importance of transparency, collective decision-making and respect for the voices of its members,” the statement concluded.
