AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Benni McCarthy challenges Kenya to rise to occasion against South Africa
Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy has challenged his players to show character and belief as they prepare for a demanding double-header against South Africa in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Harambee Stars will travel to South Africa to face Bafana Bafana at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday, November 13, before hosting the same opponents at Nyayo National Stadium four days later.
South Africa have made a strong start to their qualifying campaign, sitting top of Group D with six points after victories over Guinea (2-1) and Eritrea (5-0).
Kenya, meanwhile, occupy third position with just one point from their opening two matches, having drawn 1-1 with Eritrea before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Guinea.
Despite the difficult task awaiting his side, McCarthy insists Kenya will approach the encounters with ambition and determination rather than simply making up the numbers.
“We have to approach these matches with the right mentality,” McCarthy said, according to The Star Kenya.
“South Africa have quality and experience, but we must believe in ourselves and play to our strengths. We are not going there merely to participate.
“We need players who are ready to compete and understand what it means to represent their country. Everyone called up must come with the hunger to fight for a place in the team.
“Young players must understand that talent alone is not enough. They have to work hard, learn and show that they can handle the demands of international football.
“We respect South Africa, but our responsibility is to Kenya. We want to compete, get results and give our supporters something to be proud of.”
The two matches will present a significant test for McCarthy, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career with South Africa and remains one of the country’s most celebrated football figures.
However, the former Bafana Bafana striker will be determined to guide Kenya to positive results against his former national team.
The Harambee Stars have already secured their place at the 2027 AFCON as co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
McCarthy will therefore be keen to use the remaining qualifying matches to strengthen his squad, assess his options and build momentum ahead of the continental tournament.
