Lamine Yamal’s record-breaking form puts Barcelona’s lead on the line at Atletico Madrid

Lamine Yamal will be the main focus when Barcelona visit Wanda Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid on Sunday, with the teenager arriving as the most productive attacker in Europe this season.

The match is one of the defining fixtures of the campaign, not only because Atletico are among the leading contenders for the title, but also because the La Liga summit is at stake.

Barcelona currently lead Diego Simeone’s side by two points and know victory or a draw will guarantee they remain top. An Atletico win would move them into first place, while Real Madrid could draw level with Barcelona on points.

Yamal, who is not yet 20, has emerged as one of Barcelona’s most important players alongside Raphinha. His performances since the start of the season have been reflected in his numbers, with the forward scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in La Liga and the Champions League.

That gives him a direct contribution to 24 of Barcelona’s goals, more than a third of the team’s total, according to Marca.

No other player in Europe has matched Yamal’s combined figures. Raphinha is the closest challenger, with 22 goals and assists, while Kylian Mbappe is third on 19. Harry Kane and Erling Haaland follow with 16 and 14 respectively.

Yamal will arrive at Wanda Metropolitano looking to extend his scoring run after finding the net five times in his past five matches, an average of one goal per game.

He has also been a constant presence in Hansi Flick’s team. The Barcelona manager rarely rests him for more than a few minutes late in a match, and Yamal has played more minutes than any other player at the club this season.

He has accumulated 1,263 minutes, ahead of Juan Garcia on 1,216, Cubarsi on 1,052 and Pedri on 1,023. They are the only four Barcelona players to have surpassed 1,000 minutes this season.

Records and the Kopa Trophy

Yamal’s form has brought widespread recognition. Although he did not win the Ballon d’Or, which ultimately went to Harry Kane, he was named the best young player for the third time and received the Kopa Trophy.

A few days ago, he also surpassed Mbappe’s record for the most Champions League goals scored by a player under the age of 20. The Real Madrid forward had scored 13, while Yamal has already reached 14, with an entire season still ahead of him before he turns 20 next summer.

Flick praised Yamal’s displays earlier this week, saying: “Lamine, in my opinion, is the best player in the world at the moment. I am very happy with his performance. He is in good spirits and, when he is fully focused, his performance is exceptional.”

Barcelona will need Yamal at his best against Atletico Madrid on Sunday. In a match that could decide the league leaders, being good may not be enough they may need Yamal to be Yamal.
