Adel Mostafa emerges as leading candidate for Egypt Olympic team assistant manager

A source within the Egyptian Football Association has identified Adel Mostafa as the leading candidate to become assistant manager of the Egypt Olympic team.

“Adel Mostafa is strongly the closest candidate to take the position of assistant manager of the Olympic team,” the source told FilGoal.com.

Mostafa previously worked as an assistant coach on the Al Ahly staff led by Danish manager Jess Thorup. That role is his most recent coaching experience.

Egypt’s Olympic team are preparing to begin their build-up to the Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations with a friendly against Japan.

FilGoal.com had previously learned that Hamada Sedky was the leading candidate to take charge of the team. If Sedky’s appointment is confirmed, he is expected to work alongside Ahmed Fathy as coach, with Essam El Hadary responsible for the goalkeepers.

Sedky’s latest position ended when Algerian club ES Setif terminated his contract, with the Egyptian leaving his role at the end of October.

During his time in charge, ES Setif played six matches, winning once, drawing twice and losing three times. The club are 12th in the Algerian league table with five points, and sit one point clear of the relegation places.

Egypt will host the Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations finals in November 2027. The tournament will serve as a qualifying competition for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Egypt Olympic team are scheduled to face Japan in a friendly on Tuesday, 17 November, with kick-off at 18:00.

Shawky Gharib, the technical director of the Egyptian Football Association, is currently overseeing the Olympic team on a temporary basis while the federation finalises the coaching staff.

Gharib led the team’s first training camp, which included physical and medical assessments but no friendly matches.
